So whats the story behind the name?
Well, when we first started out we wanted something different. It shouldn’t be like www.benedictchen.com. It was never to be a company which was just about myself.
I picked the name Black Hat because I wanted to draw relationships with thinking caps and how that is a metaphor for just putting your head down and do your best on a particular project of difficult task. Also, there is a lingo which refers to Black Hat as a kind of “maverick” way of doing things. I wanted that little bit of the attitude to take chances, which will push the work to new levels.
Black Hat? Com’on Ben, you gotta think of something better than that.
(laughs) Yeah! I know, but I just like the way it sounds. Plus, I have a thing for hats.
No wait, aren’t you a Marketing & Psychology Major in Business School? What are you doing as a Photographer?
I actually get asked that question a lot (especially from my parents). But yeah it is true, this isn’t the default career choice. However I believe that a successful photographer isn’t just good at taking pictures. More importantly, I believe that Marketing and Photography are indeed closely linked. To have that background enables me to understand what clients want better, what they are looking for and how the images that I capture can be used consistently with their direction.
But in the end, I just enjoy taking pictures and capturing moments which will make my clients go “Wow, this is beautiful.”
